THEY SAY I'M DIFFERENT: BLUES REVUE

THEY SAY I'M DIFFERENT: BLUES REVUE

The musical legacy of funk pioneer Betty Davis celebrated by vocalist Therocelle Moore and an all-star band.

In a biography for AllMusic, Andy Kellman wrote: "Funk vocalist, songwriter, and producer Betty Davis was artistic and sexual liberation personified. Uncompromising, unfiltered, and ahead of its time, her small body of work consequently made little commercial impact but gradually found a wider audience. She released her first recordings as Betty Mabry in 1964, had a profound effect on Miles Davis -- to whom she was briefly married -- and is known most for her progressive left-field funk albums issued the following decade, namely her self-titled debut and the charting (and fittingly titled) They Say I'm Different and Nasty Gal. So unbothered by mainstream acceptance was Davis that much of her studio work remained unreleased until decades after the fact. Well before her death in 2022, Davis became an enduring influence heard in the output of artists ranging from Millie Jackson to Prince, from Macy Gray to Beyoncé, and from R&B balladeers to hardcore rappers."

This special show is one-night-only experience featuring vocalist Therocelle Moore and an ensemble of singers and musicians with deep roots in the Richmond blues, funk and soul music scenes. Forming her sound since being introduced to the likes of Prince, Led Zeppelin, Otis Redding - and heavily influenced by soulful rock and roll - Therocelle combines powerhouse vocals with oldies soul. She has 20+ years of experience as a songwriter and arranger. As a performer, she provided background vocals for Keller Williams’ Grateful Gospel and More Than A Little albums. She has performed as a special guest vocalist on stages all over Virginia.

The band includes: Dave Clemens (guitar); Kevin Kuzas (guitar); Dave Nardo (bass); and Zach Bostic (drums). Special guest vocalists are: Sam Reed and Anthony Cosby-Knowles.

Therocelle describes her concept for the show: "Back in the early 2000's, a friend told me to check out Betty Davis. I took a listen and found the boldness that animated her albums ringed true through her music. I thought of this show idea when I heard her song, They Say I'm Different. Fast forward to now. I had the opportunity to present this idea to a group of musicians I met at Révéler. We have been working on this concept for most of the year and we hope to broaden its reach in the future."

Jazz icon, and Betty's ex-spouse, Miles Davis said of her: "Madonna before Madonna. Prince before Prince." Experience an evening both funky and strange in all the right ways (talk about it, talk about it)! In addition to Betty's music, the band will explore her inspirations as well: from Big Mama Thornton to Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf to Bessie Smith, and more.

With only 85 seats, shows at Révéler are intimate and immersive. A romantic venue with exquisite sound and dreamy vibes, Révéler offers a unique selection of cocktails, wines, beers, bubbles, and non-alcoholic beverages. Our kitchen delivers small plates crafted with care.
