TRES EN PUNTO is a trio romántico. The band’s name describes the way the members of the trio seamlessly blend their voices “en Punto” (on the dot) in close, three-part harmony, combined with virtuoso guitar work. While the trio specializes in romantic bolero-style music, their repertoire includes all Latin rhythms, as well as Mexican ranchero ballads and Tex-Mex and American country classics.
Based in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, TRES EN PUNTO was formed in 2012 when bandleader Gerardo Calera and long-time friend Omar Javier joined forces. Under the mentorship of Gilberto and Raul Puente, who founded the legendary Los Tres Reyes (The Three Kings) in 1957, the trio has built a following in Texas and beyond. Increasingly, the trio has taken its music beyond its Rio Grande Valley base to other cities in the state, and then expanding with performances from coast to coast – Los Angeles to Virginia – including a 2021 performance at the Richmond (Virginia) Folk Festival. The band has recorded three albums: Contigo (2015), Contigo Aprendi (2019) and La Mejor de Todas (2020); their music is available on all digital download and streaming platforms.
TRES EN PUNTO’s three voices include tenor Alberto Ortiz as the primera voz (first voice) on melody and rhythm guitar. Omar Javier is the segunda voz (second voice) and anchors the group on bass. Band leader and lead guitarist Gerardo Calera creates musical magic on his requinto and sings the lower tercera voz (third voice).
The band performed at The Richmond International Folk Festival in 2021.
